Change in Residential Property Sale Inspection Requirements

Please be advised that, effective January 1, 2026, Hopewell Township, Cumberland County will no longer require local Certificate of Occupancy (CO) or Smoke Certification inspections in connection with the sale of residential properties.

Notwithstanding the above, compliance inspections for smoke detectors, carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, and 911 house numbering remain mandatory and must be completed satisfactorily prior to the closing of title.

Effective January 1, 2026, these required inspections will be administered by the City of Bridgeton Fire Department Fire Marshall’s Office. All inspections must be scheduled and successfully completed no less than 10 days prior to the anticipated closing date.
